NAHOKO PRESS ARCHIVE PROJECT
A Thoughtful Tribute to Craft, Memory, and the Life of the Printed Page
The NAHOKO PRESS ARCHIVE PROJECT honors the enduring beauty of craftsmanship, memory, and the tactile presence of the printed page. In 2015, the first edition of “A Daibo Coffee Manual” was carefully typeset by hand and printed using traditional letterpress techniques at Houbunsha Printing, a respected letterpress studio in Japan with over seventy years of dedication to the craft. When Houbunsha closed its doors, a significant chapter in Tokyo’s letterpress tradition quietly came to an end.
More than a reprint, this edition serves as a quiet gesture of preservation and a bridge between generations of craft. Its presence reminds us that memory can live not only in words, but in the weight, texture, and silence of the printed page.

Daibo Coffee - Brewing Tools
This limited edition set, consisting of a coffee pot and two flannel filters, is a faithful reproduction of the distinctive coffee brewing tools that Katsuji Daibo used in his coffee shop. He found the ideal material for his nel drip coffee: the thickest unbleached muslin (with a single brushed side) for straining consommé soup. This was achieved through a process of trial and error. The stainless-steel pot from a local hardware store was also modified by narrowing the spout with a hammer to allow for a very thin stream of water drips.

The Secret Story of His Coffee Pot
To explain the brewing process, I will start with the coffee pot. It was almost 43 or 44 years ago when I first visited a place called CAFÉ DE L’AMBRE. I will never forget what I saw that day. I was moved by how the hot water, like a piece of thread, fell shimmering down the narrow spout of an enamel pot. The shop’s atmosphere and the water threading down the spout made me feel like I was in a dream. I am pretty sure that this was when I decided to use a muslin (nel drip) filter and a pot with a narrow spout. (Katsuji Daibo “A Daibo Coffee Manual,” p.9)
L'AMBRE Coffee Pot (Red or White) & A Daibo Coffee Manual
A set consisting of the L'AMBRE Coffee Pot and a copy of the book “A Daibo Coffee Manual” (published by NAHOKO PRESS, 2024)
L'AMBRE Coffee Pot (Red or White)
This is an enameled coffee pot created under the supervision of one of the legendary coffee specialists, Mr. Ichiro Sekiguchi, the founder of CAFÉ DE L’AMBRE. He said that by all accounts, the best material for boiling water that does not affect the quality of the water is enamelware. The construction of the coffee pot should have a narrow spout, and he thought that this spout was the supreme ideal shape for dripping with the feeling of placing each drop of hot water on the coffee grains.
